MASTIC - A Mastic man convicted of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death was given the maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison today. Police say Guenter Wende, 42, fatally stabbed 25-year-old Laura Pizzini because she rebuffed his attempts to rekindle their relationship. Prosecutors say Wende confessed to the 2009 murder and even sent the victim's family a letter of apology. Wende's attorney argued that the confession was beaten out of him by police. Pizzini's parents say they have been devastated by her death. They say they feel that justice was served and they're ready to "start healing." Wende's attorney says he was convicted on circumstantial evidence and deserves a new trial.
