WOODBURY - A freelance photographer from Syosset is back in the United States after being kidnapped and tortured by Syrian rebels.

Matthew Schrier, 35, says he was tortured for seven months in a Syrian prison following his capture by a group linked to al-Qaida. The Hofstra graduate says his captors wanted him to admit that he was an American spy, beating him profusely in the process.

Schrier says he was held alongside a fellow American, and the two of them hatched a plan to escape through a window. Schrier was able to run free, but left the other man behind after he wasn't able to fit through the opening.

He may be home, but Schrier says he will not have full closure until he knows his fellow inmate makes it home.
