Maryhaven Center of Hope resident Dainell Simmons dies after police struggle in Middle Island

Officials say they were called to the home because an emotionally disturbed person reportedly turned violent. (7/25/13)

MIDDLE ISLAND - Authorities say a resident of a group home is dead tonight after a violent struggle with police.

Police were called to Maryhaven Center of Hope on Wednesday night after Dainell Simmons, 29, had a violent outburst that lasted for 45 minutes. Staff members say Simmons banged into walls and hit staff members.

Officers were able to calm Simmons down for a minute, but upon hearing he was headed to the hospital for an evaluation, police say he became violent again.

Investigators say Simmons died after being Tasered and pepper-sprayed by officers. Detectives say the Tasers are being analyzed to confirm the number of times they were used in the confrontation.
