HEMPSTEAD - A fire broke out following a manhole explosion at Fulton Avenue and Cathedral Street in Hempstead this evening.

Officials say no one was injured in the incident, but one car was damaged as it was passing over the manhole at the time of the blast.

Firefighters tested the area for carbon monoxide and the readings came back normal, but three nearby businesses were told to close and residents at 51 Bell St. were evacuated.

Hempstead police say the apartment building was fine and having tenants evacuate was a miscommunication. They also say that National Grid has confirmed there is no danger to any adjacent apartments, homes or businesses.

There is no word yet on the exact cause of the explosion.
