Man's body found on Brentwood street

BRENTWOOD - Residents in Brentwood woke up this morning to find a man's body lying in the street.

Suffolk police say they arrived on Nimitz Avenue in Brentwood just after 6 a.m. to discover an unidentified Hispanic man lying dead in the gutter. According to officials, the victim died from a wound to his head or torso.

Neighbors say there has been a string of violent incidents in the area in recent years and they have grave concerns about the safety of their children.

As News 12 Long Island reported back in July 2009, a man was hacked to death with a machete at the corner of Nimitz Avenue and Patton Street. A month later, two teenagers were critically injured in a drive-by shooting at the corner of Nimitz Avenue and Bradley Street.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that today's murder could be gang-related. Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
