HOLBROOK - Authorities say a driver was severely injured today after he tried to stop a tractor-trailer's runaway tire from slamming into his car.

Police say the victim pulled over on the Long Island Expressway off-ramp westbound at exit 61 to check out a noise he heard in his Jeep. Authorities say an 18-wheeler was traveling toward the exit ramp when two of its tires flew off. The victim was hit by a runaway tire when he tried to stop it from slamming into his Jeep, police say.

The victim was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital. His condition is unknown.
