Man gets 4-12 years in fatal Bohemia DWI crash

A Holbrook man was sentenced today to four to 12 years for a fatal drunken-driving accident in Bohemia. Robert Watson rear-ended a car last October

RIVERHEAD - A Holbrook man was sentenced today to four to 12 years for a fatal drunken-driving accident in Bohemia.

Robert Watson rear-ended a car last October on Veterans Highway, killing Kevin Mead, of Patchogue. Prosecutors say Mead, a military serviceman, was heading to MacArthur Airport on his way to Disney World to celebrate his 27th birthday with his girlfriend.

Watson fled the scene and was found behind a telephone pole with a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit, according to officials.

In July, Watson pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault. Today in court, he read a statement saying, "I have never been more thoroughly disgusted with myself in my life. A son must live without a father because of me. I can never say it enough, I'm sorry for what I've done."

However, Mead's girlfriend, Stephanie Collins, says she cannot forgive Watson.

Watson's attorney says his client hopes to educate people on the dangers of drinking and driving when he gets out of prison.
