HEMPSTEAD - Police have arrested a Hempstead man they say attempted to carjack an SUV on California Avenue last night.

Sharon Washington says the man, identified by police as 52-year-old Asburn Neysmith, leaped through the open rear window of her niece's SUV, which was idling outside her home. Neysmith landed in the back seat on top of Washington's nephews, who are six and 12, and Washington says they tried to escape while Neysmith struggled for control of the car. The 12-year-old tried to jump out and his legs were run over.

Neighbors eventually freed everyone from the car, taking the keys and trapping Neysmith inside until the police came. The two children were treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released.

Police say Neysmith, a volunteer firefighter, has no prior criminal record.
