ROOSEVELT - A man was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend with a kitchen knife last night in Roosevelt.

Police say Tremaine Ashley, 37, slashed his 34-year-old girlfriend in the neck before stabbing her in the chest at her house on Park Avenue. The woman was taken to the hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition.

Ashley allegedly fled the scene afterward and was found in Hempstead after getting into a car crash. Police say he traveled northbound on Baldwin Road before crashing into a Dodge Caravan with five people inside. Ashley was injured in the accident. The five people in the van were treated for minor injuries.

Ashley was charged with attempted murder and driving while under the influence of drugs. Police say he will be arraigned when medically practical.
