CENTRAL ISLIP - A homeless man accused of burglarizing the same West Islip church four times admitted his crimes and battle with drug addictions in a police statement obtained by News 12.

Michael Fredericks was arrested Monday and charged with four counts of burglary. Authorities say his most recent burglary took place after Palm Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Police say Fredericks stole money from the church's candle donation box on four separate occasions last month. They say he used that money to buy heroin.

News 12 obtained a copy of Fredericks' statement to police, in which he admitted to the burglaries and apologized to the church. He wrote about his struggle with his drug addiction and admitted to using heroin every day for the past two years. In the statement, he also asked for help to fight his addiction.

In court, however, Fredericks pleaded not guilty. Fredericks' attorney asked for a reasonable bail, since his client has no prior convictions.

Fredericks' bond was set at $2,500. His next court date is Thursday.
