CENTERPORT - A Centerport teen battling a debilitating disease gets some of his freedom back today in a newly remodeled home.

Dylan Thompson, 19, has a condition called Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He is wheelchair-bound and his muscles are deteriorating, which made it hard for him to move around his old home.

A social worker was able to get the Thompson family in touch with a nonprofit organization called Building Hope for Long Island. With more than 300 volunteers and about five and a half months, Dylan's home was remodeled to fit his needs.

The changes, which include a handicapped bathroom and garage that allows Dylan full access to the house, cost about $175,000.

Dylan, a freshman at Five Towns College, says the remodel allows him to be a normal teenager.
