LYNBROOK - A Lynbrook village police officer suffered broken bones Wednesday afternoon after trying to stop a suspect escaping from a Citibank on Merrick Road and Broadway.

Officials say three suspects were trying to pass phony checks, prompting a teller to set the alarm. Village officers swarmed the bank within a matter of minutes.

One female suspect was captured outside the bank, according to police. They say another suspect, a male, tried to run to his vehicle when one officer tried to drag him out of the window, causing the car to lurch forward and knock down the officer.

Lynbrook Village Mayor William Hendrick says that officer broke several fingers. He also says the suspect in the getaway car sped down Broadway, missed a turn onto Scranton Avenue and wound up crashing into a pump and pole at a gas station. Police arrested him at the scene.

News 12 is told that the officer is expected to be OK.

Police are still seeking the third suspect.
