SMITHTOWN - Longtime Smithtown Supervisor Pat Vecchio is being challenged in the Republican Party primary next week.
Vecchio, who was first elected in 1977, is the longest serving town supervisor in New York state, and he is seeking another term.
But Councilman Bob Creighton also wants the Republican nomination for supervisor. He says Vecchio is stagnating the town by opposing too many development projects.

Vecchio believes voters want him to continue to lead the town.
Creighton already has the Conservative Party nomination for town supervisor. If he loses the Republican primary, it will set up a three-way race in November between Creighton, Vecchio and the Democratic candidate.
