HUNTINGTON - Longtime Newsday columnist Ed Lowe, a man known as Long Island's favorite storyteller, was laid to rest today after losing his battle with cancer at the age of 64. Lowe was remembered by his family and colleagues as a kind man who had a keen insight into everyday life on Long Island.Newsday editorial writer Bob Keeler says that unlike some of his colleagues who have spent their working lives following celebrities, Lowe knew that there are many extraordinary stories out there involving ordinary people.

"Ed listened patiently and respectfully to all kinds of people," says columnist Ellis Henican.

Right out of college, Lowe worked as an English teacher in Lindenhurst, but later he found his true calling at Newsday, where he stayed for more than 30 years.
