ROBERT MOSES STATE PARK - Long Islanders headed to the beaches Saturday in an effort to escape the brutal heat that has plagued the northeast all week.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for Nassau and Suffolk counties effective through Sunday at 10 p.m.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo extended hours at several Long Island beaches this weekend. Jones Beach, Robert Moses, Hither Hills and Sunken Meadow will be open with lifeguards on duty until 8 p.m.

There are also extended pool hours and cooling centers in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
