WOODBURY - A tax break passed in Congress is expected to give Long Islanders $1,500 more in take-home pay this year.

The Obama administration says the new Social Security Tax Break, part of a tax package negotiated with Republican lawmakers, is a way to boost the economy immediately.

The tax cut means the federal government will take in about $112 billion less in tax revenue this year, which critics say could ultimately hurt the Social Security system.

The tax cut expires at the end of the year.
