MELVILLE - With prices at the pump continuing to rise, some Long Islanders say they're sharing each other's pain by sharing a ride to work.

The Department of Transportation says about 38,000 residents are currently sharing rides. According to the Morelli family, of Huntington Station, they are saving hundreds of dollars a year by carpooling to Melville and Farmingdale each day.

Drivers interested in finding someone traveling in their direction can get help from a new computerized carpooling service called "511 NY Ride Share," which is funded by federal and state grants.
