SHELTER ISLAND - (AP) - Police have charged a Long Island man withdriving a go-cart while drunk and carrying an underage passenger. Shelter Island police said 18-year-old Lennon Sarfarti wasstopped while driving the go-cart on a public highway around 4 a.m.on Thursday. Police said his breath test exceeded the .08 percentlevel for drunkenness. Shelter Island Police Chief James Read said Sarfarti had drivenabout two miles with one minor clinging to the back of the go-cartand another sitting on his lap. He was charged with felony charges of driving while intoxicatedunder a 2009 state statute known as Leandra's Law, which calls forup to four years in prison for driving while drunk with a minor inthe vehicle. Police also charged him with endangering the welfareof a child.
