Long Island food pantries suffer from supplies shortage

The recent spike in demand for food and clothing is leaving many Long Island food pantries with a shortage. (2/19/14)

HAUPPAUGE - A recent increase in demand for food and clothing has been leaving some Long Island food pantries with bare shelves and a shortage of supplies.

Long Island Cares Inc. says its food banks are seeing a 25 to 30 percent increase in the number of people coming in for aid.

A study run by the company says nearly 64 percent of all agencies are reporting an inadequate amount of food.

Long Island Cares says it will be meeting with food pantries to see how it can meet the increased demand.
