Long Island dodges another winter bullet

Long Islanders who were hoping to see a winter wonderland outside their windows today woke up to a light wintry mix that left no more

WESTBURY - Long Islanders who were hoping to see a winter wonderland outside their windows today woke up to a light wintry mix that left no more than a dusting of snow on the ground, which then quickly melted.

Sam Lee recalls how this time last year, he was digging his car out of a pile of snow. Today, however, there were only light flurries.

While most Long Islanders are happy about the mild weather, snowboard enthusiast Jeff Renert says he is disappointed, especially after having invested money in new snow tires and a snow blower.

Despite the ostensible lack of snow so far this winter, Will Baron, the manager of the Westbury Home Depot, says snow gear sales are still up since people want to be prepared.

"The fear of having a bad winter spiked sales," he says.
