CENTER MORICHES - An event held in Suffolk County today let people shop while helping out dogs in need.

The Long Island Bulldog Rescue group hosted its annual yard sale and barbecue in Center Moriches.

The mission of the rescue group is to support and rescue abandoned and abused bulldogs.

Just last week, eight bulldogs were surrendered in one day, organizers say. It's a big problem on Long Island, according to the Stony Brook-based group, because people often adopt the dogs based on cuteness without realizing how much care they require. The breed can suffer from skin conditions and breathing issues that demand attention and veterinary care.

The group says it's looking for foster homes and forever homes for its dogs.

All of the proceeds from today's event will go to the dogs.
