LONG BEACH - The Long Beach City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday against allowing the sale of alcohol at boardwalk concession stands.

At Long Beach City Hall, residents engaged in spirited debate for hours over the proposal that would allow business owners to apply for a liquor license from the state.

City Council members said safety and other concerns outweighed giving the vendors the option to sell booze.

Under the proposal, restaurants that already serve food at concession stands along the boardwalk would have been allowed to sell a limited amount of alcohol.

Kelly Sullivan, whose husband owns Beach Local Cafe, said that if the resolution had passed, the restaurant would have put strict conditions on alcohol sales, such as restricting service to people 23 and older and having security guards to maintain order.

Opponents like Long Beach lifeguard Roy Lester said that allowing liquor sales on the boardwalk would put the public at risk.
