LONG BEACH - Officials are urging Long Beach residents to prepare for the worst before Hurricane Sandy makes landfall sometime Monday.

City Manager Jack Schnirman says residents of Long Beach must evacuate as soon as possible.

Residents are being told to bring everything indoors, secure their homes and get off the barrier island before conditions get any worse.

Schnirman says the Atlantic Beach Bridge and the Long Beach Bridge are only open for outbound traffic. The Meadowbrook Parkway is closed southbound at Merrick Road. Shuttles are available to take residents to a shelter located at Levittown High School.

The Long Beach School District is closed for Monday.

The county has also activated its non-emergency hotline, 1-888-684-4274.
