LONG BEACH - Long Beach officials marked the rebuilding of its iconic boardwalk Saturday.

The boardwalk was destroyed during Superstorm Sandy.

Demolition on the structure began last week. Wood is being torn down, railings dismantled, and the ceremonial benches dedicated to loved ones will be stored, until they can reclaim their view by the sea.

Only the concrete stantions, erected a century ago, will remain.

The city will soon accept engineering proposals to rebuild the boardwalk, as it awaits crucial federal aid.

City officials say the goal is to have the boardwalk safely up and running by the summer.
