LONG BEACH - ? As Hurricane Sandy begins to close in on the northeast, Long Beach is already feeling the effects of the storm.

News 12 Long Island?s Erin Colton says the winds have been increasingly stronger this morning and the waters are rising. Officials are expecting a storm surge of 5 to 12 feet that will create waves of 15 to 25 feet. The worst of the storm is expected from 6 p.m. Monday through 6 a.m. Tuesday. Officials urged Long Beach residents to evacuate yesterday prior to Sandy making landfall. The Long Beach School District is closed today. Nassau County has also activated its non-emergency hotline, 1-888-684-4274.
