MINEOLA - Local lawmakers are teaming with Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice to make DWI laws on Long Island more stringent.

While laws against drinking and driving have become tougher in New York State - you can, for example, be convicted of a felony under Leandra's law if you drive under the influence with children in the car - lawmakers say loopholes are making it too easy for drivers convicted of DWI to get back behind the wheel.

"They're getting around by saying we no longer have a car - no longer have a registered car - and they're really just shifting the registration to a family member or friend," says state Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr. (R-Merrick).

Lawmakers say new legislation would make it more difficult for offenders to make the case they don't own or have access to a car or get around installing an ignition interlock, among other measures.
