MINEOLA - A Hempstead man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for leading police on a drunken high-speed chase that ended with a fatal crash.

Prosecutors had alleged that Lloyd Williams got into a bar fight in June 2011, and a shot was fired. They say he then fled the scene and led police on a high-speed pursuit that culminated in him crashing into Chad Whethers' car. The crash killed Whethers instantly.

Authorities say Williams had a blood alcohol content of .27, more than three times the legal limit. They say he was also driving high on marijuana.

Williams apologized to the Whethers family in court today, saying he was driving aggressively at the time because he believed he was being shot at by the bouncer of the bar he had just left.
