WOODBURY - Human error by an employee following a lightning strike caused a shutdown of service for the Long Island Rail Road last month, according to a report released by the LIRR.

The report cites that the error was made while the worker was attempting to restore service, causing thousands of commuters to be stranded during the evening rush Sept. 29.

At the same time the report was released, the LIRR released its annual customer satisfaction survey.

The survey shows riders' overall satisfaction with the railroad has fallen to 78 percent, from 89 percent a year ago.

LIRR spokesman Joe Calderone says this year has been a tough year for the system with a blizzard, tornado, hurricane and lightning all affecting service.
