LINDENHURST - The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) says the train station escalator where a Lindenhurst senior was killed earlier this week was going to be replaced.

Maintenance records show the escalator was repaired twice last month, and it was scheduled to be replaced, but the work was delayed due to lack of funds, according to the LIRR.

On Tuesday, Irene Bernatzky was on her way into the city to celebrate her 89th birthday when her clothes got stuck in the escalator treads and she died from asphyxiation.
