WESTBURY - The controversial LIRR third-track project could mean some small Long Island businesses will find themselves uprooted.

The LIRR wants to add a third track along a nearly 10-mile stretch from the Queens border out to Hicksville.

The plan eliminates all grade crossings in that stretch, and would require the road to go underneath the tracks.  To do that, the railroad would have to acquire some of the surrounding property.

Nearby businesses like Dependable Acme in Westbury could be forced to sell its business and property to the railroad. While the LIRR would pay the businesses whatever is considered fair market value, under the eminent domain law the business would have to sell.

“It wasn't in the plan," says Annette Farragher, of Dependable Acme. “I'd like to stay in the area. I have a couple of guys from the area and it's going to be hard to find a place to be the same as this in the area.”

The railroad says that only a sliver of the Westbury property would be needed for the project, and no final decision has been reached.

A total of four businesses along the stretch could lose all or part of their properties. Two of the businesses are in New Hyde Park, one in New Cassel and one in Westbury.

The railroad points out that no private homes would have to be acquired for the project, unlike the original third-track proposal several years ago.
