LIPA works to improve after lessons learned from Irene

It has been a year since Tropical Storm Irene left thousands of Long Islanders in the dark. Now, many are questioning if LIPA is better

WOODBURY - It has been a year since Tropical Storm Irene left thousands of Long Islanders in the dark. Now, many are questioning if LIPA is better prepared to deal with a disaster.

Irene swamped Long Island, knocking down trees and power lines, and put a half a million LIPA customers in the dark.

Many residents told News 12 Long Island that the worst part of the storm was trying to get information from LIPA about the outages.

LIPA held hearings, studies were done, and the COO of LIPA, Michael Hervey, says they are concentrating on updating their communication during storms.

News 12 Long Island's Jill Wagner got a behind the scenes look at the LIPA dispatch hub in Hicksville.

Hervey says LIPA is in the middle of a $1 million computer upgrade, which will make estimated repair times more accurate. MyPics: Hurricane Irene on Long Island
