LIPA warns residents to conserve power during heat wave

With a heat wave making its way through the tri-state area for the second day in a row, Long Islanders are struggling to stay cool

EAST MEADOW - With a heat wave making its way through the tri-state area for the second day in a row, Long Islanders are struggling to stay cool without breaking the bank.

LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michael Hervey advises people who want to keep their energy expenses in check to have their air conditioners on a timer and turn them on just a few hours before coming home, rather than have the appliances run all day.

In fact, Long Island has reached its all-time high for electrical consumption this afternoon at 5,800 megawatts.

LIPA says it has the resources to accommodate the heightened demand, but the utility is still asking users to conserve power to avoid outages.

LIPA will have extra crews working this weekend. If you experience a power outage, call LIPA at 1-800-490-0075.
