LIPA mulls changing fuel portion of customer bills

LIPA is proposing a sizable change to the way its customers are billed. Currently, LIPA adjusts the fuel portion of customer bills every three months.

HAUPPAUGE - LIPA is proposing a sizable change to the way its customers are billed. Currently, LIPA adjusts the fuel portion of customer bills every three months. That portion is the amount that LIPA charges customers to generate electricity. At a public meeting in Hauppauge today, LIPA officials proposed changing the adjustment to every month. Officials say the change will be more transparent and more accurately reflect costs. Utility officials note that the change most likely won't affect the average rates that customers pay, but they hope the changes will encourage people to be more energy conscientious. An energy expert says the proposed change is good, but points out that LIPA will still be predicting electricity costs one month in advance. Most utilities simply bill customers for usage instead of predicting upcoming costs. LIPA is expected to vote on the proposal at a meeting on Oct. 25.
