SHELTER ISLAND - ? LIPA has given an apology to the family of a fallen East End hero.

The utility company came under fire this week for charging a fee to hang American flags on utility poles.

Shelter Island put the flags up to honor Army Lt. Joseph Theinert who was killed in Afghanistan last year.

Now, LIPA chairman Howard Steinberg is apologizing to the Theinert family.

Steinberg says he and other LIPA trustees will personally pay any future fees for similar flag displays.
