LINDENHURST - A Lindenhurst Middle School staff member has been diagnosed with the rare but contagious bacterial skin infection known as Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA, district officials say.

The person is out receiving treatment and will not return to school until cleared by a doctor.

School officials are particularly concerned about this condition because unlike most staph infections, which can be commonly treated by most germ-killing antibiotics, MRSA is an infection which is resistant to antibiotics.

District officials have sent a letter home notifying parents about the situation.
