COPIAGUE - Memorial Day ended tragically for one big bird from Lindenhurst.
A 5-foot-tall emu escaped from a yard on East Santa Barbara Road in Lindenhurst and ran through the streets today before ending up in a Copiague canal.
The emu, which belonged to Stephen Weinkselbaum and his father, died today after police pulled it from the water.
While it's not illegal to own an emu, the Suffolk SPCA says the Weinkselbaums were charged with illegally keeping snakes, crocodiles and tortoises back in 2006. The SPCA says it was not called today to try to help in the emu rescue.
