WOODBURY - Lightning strikes during severe thunderstorms today caused serious disruptions to evening service on the Long Island Rail Road.

Hundreds of LIRR commuters spent the evening rush stalled in waiting rooms and on train platforms because service was suspended on most lines.

LIRR officials said lightning strikes damaged the system on the Babylon branch, just east of the Amityville station and along the Main Line.

Westbound LIRR service was also suspended between Jamaica and Penn Station, but has since been restored. Weather Center Watch News 12 Watch Traffic and Weather
