EAST MEADOW - Minnesota-based Cargill has announced a massive recall of its ground turkey products following a nationwide outbreak of salmonella. The recall targets 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen turkey items under several different brands that were produced between Feb. 20 and Aug. 2 of this year. So far, the salmonella outbreak has been linked to one death and 76 illnesses. "It is regrettable that people may have become ill from eating one of our ground turkey products and, for anyone who did, we are truly sorry," Cargill representatives said in a statement. Experts say it's safe to eat the contaminated meat so long as it's cooked to 165 degrees. However, many residents aren't taking any chances at all.
