FARMINGDALE - Many Long Islanders spent their day Friday making pre-snow shopping trips for essential items ahead of this weekend's nor’easter.

Blizzard conditions, significant snowfall and possible power outages are expected this weekend as the snow begins early Saturday and continues into Sunday morning. Drivers are being urged to stay off the roads, so shoppers were out in force Friday to stock up on items like milk, bread, batteries, de-icing salt, shovels and more.

Hardware stores are reporting an increase in sales of snowblowers, along with sump pumps. Coastal flooding is expected this weekend, especially during times of high tide, because the storm will hit during a full moon.

At the newly opened Stew Leonard’s store in Farmingdale, more than 20,000 people flowed through the doors Thursday to both check out the chain’s first Long Island store and to pick up storm essentials. Even more customers were expected today.

Lines were also spotted at gas stations as Long Islanders filled up their vehicles and bought extra gas for their generators.
