RIVERHEAD - A grueling boot camp-style event is trudging its way onto Long Island. Known as the Survival Race, the three-mile obstacle course took place this weekend at the 4-H camp in Riverhead. More than 3,000 participants slogged through sand, mud and wooded terrain. Organizer Dean DelPrete, of Westhampton, says mud races have been gaining popularity, largely because they allow participants to escape from the pressures of everyday life. Officials say they plan on running the event in 2013. To watch extended footage from the race, click on News 12 Extra on Optimum TV channel 612.
