HUNTINGTON - Hundreds of Long Islanders took to the streets of Huntington today to rally against strict new gun laws.

On Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law tough new restrictions on assault-style weapons and ammunition magazines. The law establishes a state registry for private gun sales and requires background checks for all gun purchases. It also states mental health professionals must contact authorities if a patient threatens to use a gun in a crime. The measure also restricts magazines from 10 bullets to seven.

Wednesday, President Barack Obama signed an executive order to reinstate a ban on assault rifles.

According to last year's FBI crime statistics, there were 323 murders committed with rifles, 728 using fists and feet, nearly 1,700 using knives and 6,220 using handguns.
