BRIGHTWATERS - ? This morning, dozens of Long Islanders swam across the Great South Bay to remember a teenager.

More than 100 people embarked on the challenge of swimming five miles across the bay.

Those participating honored Maggie Fischer. Fischer is a 17-year-old girl who was supposed to swim the Great South Bay-Cross Bay Swim 11 years ago for the first time, but died in a car accident a couple of days before it.

The swim started on Fire Island at 9 a.m. and ended hours and miles later at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters. The swim has been re-named the Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay-Cross Bay Swim.
