LONG BEACH - Long Island residents headed to the beach to celebrate the unofficial end to the summer Monday.

Beachgoers at Jones Beach told News 12 that they wanted to get the most out of their Labor Day weekend.

Sue Guliani, park director of Jones Beach, says they had a great summer season with 2.4 million visitors. Last year, they had 2.3 million visitors.

Guliani says the uptick in visitors is due to the rebuilding efforts after Superstorm Sandy.

Strong rip currents forced lifeguards and swimmers to be extra vigilant.
