Lido Beach war vet: Town threw away everything in wake of Sandy

LIDO BEACH - A Lido Beach war veteran says the town accidentally threw away all of his belongings, including those which weren't destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. William Schweitzer says his family lost nearly everything when a sanitation crew carted away the belongings he had left on the side of his house to dry. The World War II veteran's daughter, Hope, says she went looking for the family's belongings at the Lido West dump. She also contacted both Hempstead Town and Nassau County, but she says no one offered her help or even an apology. Spokesman Mike Deery told News 12 Long Island the town is sorry for the incident and says residents should keep garbage distinctly separate from items that aren't supposed to be picked up. Deery says the town has been picking up 51 tons of garbage daily since Hurricane Sandy socked Long Island, five times more than what is normally picked up.
