LIDO BEACH - More than 200 people were at Lido Beach Saturday for an annual event to honor a hero from Long Island.
It marked the seventh annual Run/Walk at Lido Beach to pay tribute to 1st Lt. Michael LiCalzi, the Marine who died in Iraq in 2006.
LiCalzi, a 24-year-old Garden City native, was commanding an elite tank unit when he and three other Marines were killed.
LiCalzi's family created the Ace in the Hole Foundation to help support families of those who died in service, and the event raises funds for those efforts.
This year's run is special because for the first time it brought together LiCalzi's family with the families of the three other Marines who perished together.
The beach location was chosen because LiCalzi spent much of his time there, enjoying the shore and surfing. The family has also set up a beachside memorial for him, complete with a surf stand.
The family hoped to raise $80,000, and all of the proceeds will go toward the Ace in the Hole Foundation.
