FREEPORT - The arrest of a Freeport woman has blown open an alleged ID theft operation that stretched across the country.

Nassau's district attorney and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced the arrest of Seerojnie Ram, of Freeport.

Officials say Ram, 57, stole the identities of more than 250 people, both alive and dead. They say she opened credit cards and checking accounts and stole tax return checks.

Ram allegedly ran the scheme since October 2013, stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from people in 31 states.

Prosecutors say postal workers became suspicious when one home started receiving lots of mail addressed to various names.

Ram is facing up to seven years in prison on grand larceny and identity theft charges. She is being held on $250,000 bond.
