MIDDLE ISLAND - A Long Island nonprofit aimed at giving injured wildlife a second chance is looking to expand its operations.

The STAR Foundation is a nonprofit organization located in Middle Island that aims to help orphaned, displaced and injured wild animals. The foundation is looking to open a second building.

Founded by co-director Lori Ketchum 20 years ago, the foundation was set up to not only help animals, but also educate Long Islanders who find wild animals in need of assistance.

STAR relies on donations to stay afloat, but it does receive free assistance from the Animal Emergency Service and its vet staff.

STAR expects to spend at least $50,000 to keep its doors open.
