OCEANSIDE - An Oceanside student who may have discovered a new treatment for lung cancer is headed to the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.Blake Smith is one of nine finalists and is the only contestant representing Long Island in this year's competition. Smith and a partner developed a drug that affects cancer cells. "In essence, they allow these cancer cells to die," he says.Cancer research is very important to Smith. A few years ago, two of his grandparents were diagnosed with the disease, he says.The Siemens Competition is being held in Washington, D.C. this weekend. The winners of the two top prizes will be awarded $100,000.
