UNIONDALE - A heat wave can be hard on anyone, but it can be especially dangerous for the elderly, who sometimes choose to keep their air conditioners off to keep their electric bill down.

Lisa Stern and other workers at Nassau's Family and Children's Association spent the day today making house calls and working the phones, warning seniors to stay cool in the extreme heat.

"We don't wait for the emergency to make sure they're covered," Stern says.

Social workers say that despite the assistance programs that are available, there are still many Long Islanders who don't have an air conditioner.

In an effort to keep low-income seniors hydrated today, volunteers with the Lighthouse Mission were handing out bottled water in Shirley.
