WOODBURY - Long Island's Republican officials were quick to denounce GOP frontrunner Donald Trump's call to temporarily ban all Muslims from entering the United States.

Trump issued a statement on his website and made the call for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the U.S." at a rally in South Carolina Monday night.

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) disagreed with Trump, saying that he "does not support any policy that calls on banning anyone from entering America solely based on their religion."

State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan also said he does not support Trump's statement.

News 12 reached out to several other Republican leaders, including Suffolk Republican Chairman John J. Lavalle and Nassau Republican Committee Chairman Joseph Mondello. Both chose to stay silent on the issue.
